The Lord is my Shepherd: Comfort from Psalm 23
Watch Biblical MessagesPsalm 23 is one of the most well-known and well-loved passages of the Bible. You may have read these verses countless times, but take a moment to let the meaning of Psalm 23 truly sink in. Whether you’re feeling anxious, weary, tearful, thankful, or distant from God, these comforting Bible verses have an encouraging word for you today.
6 Comforting Truths from Psalm 23
God Keeps Us Safe
Psalm 23 opens with, “The Lord is my shepherd,” a powerful image the author David uses to express God’s protection and provision. Just like a shepherd who pours time, energy, and love into caring for each sheep, God is devoted to our well-being.
Whether we realize it or not, we all need a shepherd. Like sheep, we’re quick to stray from God’s care, but only He can truly lead us back to safety. During tough times, it’s tempting to follow others or rely on ourselves, yet God remains the one true, faithful guide who always has our best interests at heart.

God Gives Us All We Need
Because the Lord is our shepherd, we have everything we need (Psalm 23:1). Not only does God provide for us perfectly, but He also blesses us with all good things, giving us more than we could ever ask for or imagine (Psalm 84:11).
However, just as sheep often return to the same patch of grass, even when it no longer nourishes them, we too can fall into patterns that don’t feed our souls. We need God’s guidance to move beyond the things that don’t satisfy and to fully experience His abundant grace and provision.

God Gives Us Rest
Life can feel overwhelming, especially during tough times, and we all need God’s rest to keep going. Psalm 23 tells us that God makes us lie down in green pastures and leads us beside quiet waters (Psalm 23:2).
He created us to take time away from our hectic lives to be still and soak in His Word. While escaping into TV shows or endless social media scrolling might feel like a break, it often leaves us feeling even more drained. But spending quiet time with God is the kind of rest that truly restores our mind, body, and spirit like nothing else can.
God Leads Us Back to Him
Life has its highs and lows, but through it all, God is always there to bring us back to Himself. He’s there to restore our souls and guide us along the right paths (Psalm 23:3). No matter how far we drift, God is our good shepherd, willing to leave the rest of the flock behind to find just one lost sheep (Matthew 18:12-13). His love and care never waver, and He’s always ready to lead us back home.

Your Suffering Will End
Even though it can be hard to see it in the midst of tough times, remember that they are just a season. Picture your journey as a dark valley you’re passing through. Eventually, you’ll make it through to the other side, and even now, God is right there with you (Psalm 23:4).
He’s gently comforting you and guiding you, step by step, offering His presence and care along the way. You’re not alone in the struggle, and His faithful support will carry you through to brighter days ahead.
You Are Not Alone
Even when it feels like the whole world is against you, God loves you. His presence surrounds you, overflowing with goodness and love (Psalm 23:5-6). Sometimes, we feel His presence through big blessings or clear signs. But more often, it’s in the small, quiet moments when we simply talk to Him.
These moments are just a glimpse of what’s to come. One day, in heaven, we’ll see our Good Shepherd face to face and experience the fullness of His presence forever. Until then, He’s with us every step of the way.

No matter how you’re feeling today, we hope Psalm 23 gives you strength in hard times. Remember, the comfort God gives us enables us to comfort others as well (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Who can you share Psalm 23 with today?

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
