Get ConnectedFamily responsibilities, busy schedules, and deadlines pull us in a million different directions. Over time, this constant state of “fight or flight” can take a toll on our bodies. Chronic stress can show up as heart problems, tense shoulders, and breathing troubles.
Unfortunately, when we feel overwhelmed, nutritious meals, movement, and sleep are usually the first to go. But, a healthy mindset starts with a healthy body. Let’s talk about how to release that tension in your body with these practical tips for managing stress.
General Stress Management Techniques

Eat a Well-Balanced Meal
We get it, sugar and fat seem extra appealing when we’re under a lot of pressure. However, a well-balanced, healthy diet of protein, fiber, unrefined carbohydrates, and fatty acids, can work wonders for your blood pressure and mental health.
Move Your Body
Regularly moving your body is another critical way to support yourself when you feel stressed. Physical activities such as sports, walking, running, yoga, pilates, and weight training can boost your mood and improve your sleep. Try sneaking some movement into your daily routine by walking on your lunch break, taking the stairs, or tidying your home.
Create a Sleep Routine
Lastly, make sure you are getting enough sleep, especially when you’re feeling anxious. Set a sleep schedule and stick to it. Try creating a bedtime routine to help you wind down for the night. This routine can include limiting screen time, lowering the temperature, reading in bed, or journaling a prayer.
Practice Deep Breathing
Never underestimate the power of intentional breathing. When you start to feel overwhelmed, take a few long, deep breaths. Try breathing in through your nose for four seconds, holding for seven seconds, and breathing out from your nose for eight seconds. Place your hand on your stomach and make sure that when you breathe, your belly rises. Breathwork calms your nervous systems and lets your body know it’s okay to turn off that stress response and relax.
Meditate, Read Scripture, and Pray
One of the most effective ways to deal with stress is by shifting our mindset. To manage anxiety, take a break from distractions and spend some quiet time reflecting on the promises of God. It’s comforting to know everything is under His loving care, and we don’t have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. You can even dive into some Scripture passages that talk about God’s amazing provision, like Matthew 6:25-34 or Philippians 4:6-8.
Still your mind and heart even further by meditating on a single verse or attribute about God. Meditation can also look like a heartfelt conversation with the Lord or calmly focusing on your breath. It’s all about connecting with God and resting in His peace.
How to Reduce Stress at Work
How we spend our 9-5 can majorly influence our stress. While we can’t always prevent stressful circumstances at work, these daily practices can help you better cope with stress.
Set Boundaries
Dealing with a heavy workload can certainly increase stress in your life. But remember, you are the expert when it comes to your schedule and limits. So, before you agree to take on a new opportunity or task, it’s a great idea to pause and consider whether you have the physical and mental capacity to give it your absolute best. Sometimes it’s okay to say no. Your well-being and efficiency matter.
Time Block
Another effective strategy for managing your workload is time blocking. Instead of juggling multiple tasks simultaneously, consider using tools like a calendar, timer, or spreadsheet to allocate specific time slots for each task. By focusing on one task at a time and minimizing distractions like social media, you can boost your productivity and improve your work-life balance.
Take Breaks
Don’t forget to take breaks at work, and we’re not just talking about your lunch break here. Step away from your desk a few times throughout the day to walk outside, call a friend, grab a coffee, or chat with a co-worker. These little breaks offer your mind a breather and help you reconnect with what truly matters in life.
Extended time away from work can also relieve stress in the long term. Plan a long weekend or a relaxing vacation getaway to recharge. These breaks can make the world of a difference in your mental health.

Quick Ways to Reduce Stress On The Go
We all have those busy days when there’s no time to rest or take a leisurely walk. But fear not! Here are some quick tips to reduce stress while you’re on the go.

Count Backward
When your mind is running a million miles an hour, try counting backward from ten while taking deep breaths. Counting will help take your mind off of your stressors for a few moments.
Get Outside
Even a few seconds in the sunshine can boost your mood. If you don’t have time for a walk, step outside for a few minutes and breathe in the fresh air.
Listen to Music
If you can, pop in some headphones and play calming music such as worship, classical, or instrumental. Peaceful music can calm down your racing mind and relax your body.
Stretch
Taking a moment for a quick stretch break can release some stressful tension in your body. Roll your shoulders, stretch out your legs, and if you want you can even give yourself a hand and wrist massage to calm your heart down.
What the Bible Says About Stress
While the Bible doesn’t mention the term “stress” specifically, it has a lot to say about worry and anxiety, which are often closely related to stress. The Bible tells us that God genuinely cares about what weighs our hearts down (1 Peter 5:7). Instead of sitting in our negative thoughts, God instructs us to talk to Him about our worries and even thank Him in the midst of our fears.
Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
The best stress relief is found in Jesus (John 14:27). You don’t have to carry the weight of your worries on your own (Psalm 55:22). You can trust Jesus with your stress and find that deep, comforting peace that comes from putting your trust in Him.
